Airfield

Live Data Sculpture

AirFIELD is a dynamic sculpture synchronized to real-time flight data reflecting the heartbeat of the world's busiest air travel hub, Atlanta International Airport.

The trajectories of planes taking off and landing inspired the sculpture's two sweeping forms. Viewed from the side, the sculpture resembles a bird in flight.

The sculpture comprises thousands of custom-made liquid crystal disks that change from opaque to transparent when electrically charged.

The software constantly monitors a live stream of Atlanta air traffic data, which triggers generative motion behavior rippling across the sculpture.
